I stood up, walked over to him, and hugged him for the first time.
“Why did you decide to tell me everything today of all days?”
He wiped his eyes and smiled faintly.
“Today marks twenty-two years since the first time I held you in my arms. I wanted to finally say, in front of my friends, what I was never able to tell you when we were alone.”
“What was that?” He took my hand again.
“That you are the person I cherish most in my life.”
In that moment, I realized there was no dark secret behind his words.
There was only a man who had become my father when he was under no obligation to do so, who had loved me silently for twenty-two years, and who had spent his whole life fearing I would abandon him once I knew the truth.
But that night, I didn’t leave.
For the first time, I said the words he had waited twenty-two years to hear:
“I love you, Dad.”
