“Please, open the envelope.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“There’s no money inside.”
He pushed the envelope toward me.
I opened it with trembling hands.
The rest is in the comments ‼️👇‼️👇
Inside were several old documents, a hospital ID bracelet, and a letter written in a woman’s handwriting.
But the name on the first document made me sit back down.
“Father of the child: unknown.”
Below that were the words:
“Legal guardian: Mark Davis.”
Mark Davis was my father.
“What does this mean?”
He sat across from me but couldn’t look me in the eye.
“I’m not your biological father.”
For a few moments, I couldn’t even hear the sounds of the restaurant.
My father explained that he had loved my mother when they were young. But she had chosen another man—someone who disappeared as soon as he found out she was pregnant.
After I was born, my mother was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. She knew she didn’t have much time left.
One rainy night, she brought me to my father’s house.
“She put you in my arms and asked me not to let you end up in an orphanage if something happened to her,” my father said. “The next morning, she was taken to the hospital. She died a few weeks later.”
I had misunderstood Robert’s words.
My mother hadn’t abandoned me. She had left knowing she could never come back.
“Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t my biological father?”
“Because I was afraid you’d stop calling me Dad.”
I looked at the man I had considered cold and distant my whole life.
“But you never told me you loved me.”
He lowered his head. “I didn’t know how to say it. I only knew how to work, pay for your education, stay up when you were sick, and watch from a distance to make sure you got home safe and sound. I thought that was enough.” Robert then stepped forward and placed an old photograph on the table. It showed my father as a young man, holding a newborn baby girl.
Me.
“Emily,” Robert said, “back then, this man was offered a very well-paid job abroad. Instead of accepting it, he sold his car, turned down the job, and raised a little girl with whom he shared no blood ties. When we asked him why he was sacrificing his life for someone else’s child, he replied: ‘She isn’t someone else’s child. She is my daughter.'”
I could no longer hold back my tears.
Finally, I opened my mother’s letter.
“My dear daughter: if you are reading this, it means Mark kept the promise he made to me. He may never know how to express his feelings in beautiful words, but you hold a bigger place in his heart than anyone else. Do not look for your father in the man who left. Your father is the one who chose to stay.”
