💇‍♀️Vitamins and hair growth: what do we really know?

“A vitamin to make hair grow faster.”
This promise is ubiquitous in advertisements, dietary supplements, and wellness articles. But what is the reality? Vitamins are essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the body, including the hair follicle. However, no single vitamin can “promote” growth beyond the body’s natural capabilities.

This article aims solely to inform you about the role of vitamins in hair metabolism, address common misconceptions, and, most importantly, remind you that only a doctor is qualified to assess a potential deficiency or hair growth disorder. No medical advice, treatment, or remedy is provided here.

🔍Understanding the problem:
Hair growth is a complex biological process. Each hair is born, grows, and then falls out after a cycle of several years. This cycle is influenced by:

Genetics (the main factor).
Age (growth rate decreases with age).
Diet (nutrient intake).
Hormones (androgens, thyroid, etc.).
Stress and sleep.
Potential medical conditions (anemia, deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, etc.).
Vitamins play a role at various levels: they contribute to energy production, protein synthesis (keratin, which makes up hair), protection against oxidative stress, etc. But a single vitamin cannot “trigger” hair growth if the other conditions are not met.

The real problem is believing that a vitamin deficiency is the sole cause of hair loss, or that a massive vitamin intake will accelerate growth. These ideas are simplistic and can lead to overlooking more serious causes.
